My monthly favourite posts aren’t a regular feature here on emilyloula, as I often feel that I’ve been using the same products as last month a lot, or I just don’t have anything specifically to share with you. However, this month I’ve got quite a lot of skincare and makeup items that I’ve really been loving in October that I wanted to talk about today so my monthly favourites are back!
Garnier | Micellar Water for Combination to Oily Skin > £4.99
First up is a product that I’ve only very recently come across, but one that I’m pretty much in love with already, and that’s Garnier’s Micellar water, specifically for combination to oily and sensitive skin. For the last few months, I’ve been using the regular Garnier Micellar water, but when I saw this new version on the shelves in Boots, I swear it was calling my name, and I couldn’t leave without it. I’m a total convert to micellar water in general with Garnier’s regular offering being one of my favourites, but this new PureActive version definitely tops it for me, and has now taken the crown of the best I’ve tried (yes even beating the cult Bioderma). I feel like some micellar waters leave a slight tacky film on my skin after using them, but this doesn’t happen with this new version at all. This takes off all my makeup with ease, including waterproof mascara whilst not drying my skin out, or leaving any oily residue – it’s the perfect balance for me and makes a great first cleanse.
Nip & Fab | Glycolic Fix Night Pads Extreme > £14.95
The second item of skincare that I’ve been loving this month are the Nip & Fab’s Glycolic Fix Night Pads Extreme. I’ve tried various different types of these pads from Nip & Fab including their Dragons Blood fix pads, and their original Glyolic fix pads, but these extreme night pads are definitely my favourite. These new, more powerful exfoliating pads are packed with a concentrated blend of AHAs & BHAs including Glycolic acid, Salicylic acid & Lactic acid. These amazing ingredients are said to revive and refine dull skin, decongest clogged pores, and leave your complexion looking brighter. Since they’re more powerful, Nip & Fab suggest that you use these around once, or twice a week, and at the moment I’m probably using about 2/3 a week and they’re definitely making a big difference to my skin. I love the fresh, uplifting grapefruit scent and the fact that these pads are pre soaked, really appeals to the lazy girl within me.
Vichy | Idealia Skin Sleep* > £26.50
I’ve written a full review of Vichy’s Idealia Skin Sleep so I won’t go on too much about this one, but basically you should know that this is now holy grail status for me. It’s a gorgeously scented, cooling, gel type balm that I apply as the last step in my skin routine before I go to bed and when I wake, my skin is undeniably softer, smoother, clearer and brighter. Usually, night time moisturisers feel too heavy, and greasy on my skin, leaving me with a strange residue in the morning, but this does nothing of the sort. Every time I use this, I’m genuinely impressed with how my skin looks and feels afterwards, and I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about it – I even think this has helped to clear my acne up, which is a huge bonus for me!
Rimmel | Wake Me Up Concealer > £5.49
Since starting my new job and working night shifts, I’ve definitely noticed that the bags underneath my eyes are becoming more prominent so I’ve been reaching for Rimmel’s Wake Me Up Concealer a lot this month. I’ll apply this under my eyes in the shape of a triangle, blend it out by dabbing with my mini beauty blenders, and then set with my Vichy Setting Powder, which I’ve found is a great combination. It’s said to be a full coverage concealer, which is also packed with vitamins and peptides that help to brighten and illuminate the under eye area, with an anti-fatigure effect – a rather bold claim but one that I definitely agree with! This concealer doesn’t crease on me once it’s been set at all, lasts for such a long time, and absolutely helps to cover my dark circles, as well as brightening the under eye area and at only £5.49 what’s not to love?!
Maybelline | Color Tattoo Cream Eyeshadow > £4.99
I’ve spoken about my love for Maybelline’s color tattoo’s quite a few times on here before, and I’ve even reviewed and swatched my whole collection here, but in the last month or so I’ve been using one shade pretty much non stop. When I bought ‘Metallic Pomegranate’ I honestly didn’t think it was a shade that I would get all that much use from, but boy was I wrong. It is a beautiful, deep reddened brown shade that contains little flecks of golden shimmer, absolutely perfect for autumn. As with the rest of the Maybelline Color Tattoo’s, the formula is lovely and creamy, whilst being super long wearing and can be used as an eyeshadow base, a full wash of colour or as a gel type liner, which makes them even better value coming in at under £5 each. If you haven’t tried any of the Color Tattoo’s I would definitely urge you to give them a go as they’re honestly great – my favourite shades are On & On Bronze, Creamy Beige and this beautiful Metalic Pomegranate.
MAC | Lipstick in ‘Mehr’ > £15.50
When out shopping with Lauren (from laurenselwood.co.uk) I picked up my first ever MAC lipstick in the shade ‘Mehr’, which is the most gorgeous mauvey matte pink shade. I’d been thinking about which lipstick to pick up from MAC for a while, but I’m definitely happy with my choice as ‘Mehr’ is so me! It’s the type of shade that I always reach for, and being a matte formula, it’s right up my street. Since buying this lipstick, I’ve pretty much been wearing it every time I’ve worn a lipstick – the rest of my collection hasn’t had much of a look in this month! Again, another shade that is perfect for Autumn, and one that I’m sure I’ll get much more use out of as the year goes on!
Caudalie | Vinoperfect Radiance Tinted Moisturiser > £27.00
After receiving a little sample of Caudalie’s tinted moisturiser in my May Birchbox and falling in love, I knew I had to buy the full sized version, so picked it up with my Birchbox points. It is an oil free, hydrating, SPF20 moisturiser that not only evens out and brightens my complexion, but helps to diminish skin concerns, tighten the pores, reduce excess sebum, decrease imperfections and corrects spots. I absolutely love the way that this feels on my skin, and knowing it has all these added benefits is a massive bonus in my books. Since buying this, I don’t reach for my foundations even half as much, which is such a rarity coming from a full coverage kinda girl. Whilst this doesn’t give me the coverage that a foundation would, this does leave my skin looking incredibly radiant, healthy and nourished, and when paired a good concealer (mentioned below), it’s the perfect daily base. My skin has honestly never looked better than it does now, and I’m pretty sure that’s a combination of Vichy’s Skin Sleep and wearing this, instead of clogging up my pores with a thick foundation. I’m really shocked how much I like this moisturiser but I’m a total convert, and I’ll definitely be buying myself another tube when this runs out, it’s 100% worth the price tag for me!
Vichy | Dermablend Foundation > £18.00
Since watching Vichy’s YouTube video years ago, I had my heart set on trying their Dermablend foundation, and for some reason or another this never actually happened, until very recently. Marketed as a full coverage foundation I was really excited to give it a go, but unfortunately when used as an all over foundation, I was left a bit disappointed. I found that this sat on top of my skin in a weird way, and had the habit of turning slightly cakey, which isn’t the look I generally go for. However, when I then decided to try it as a concealer instead, I was 100% sold. This is by far the best coverage ‘concealer’ I’ve ever, ever used, covering every last blemish, spot or scar I have with ease. I have rather a lot of pigmentation, acne scarring and old blemishes on my chin and jaw line, but you honestly wouldn’t be able to tell once I’ve applied this over the top – it literally all disappears! In the hope of covering said scarring and blemishes in the past I’ve tried many, many different concealers, but none of them come even close to the coverage that this foundation gives me, and although it doesn’t work as a foundation for me personally, as a concealer it’s become an absolute essential in my makeup bag.
bareMinerals | Original SPF15 Foundation > £26.00
Rewind a few years, and bareMinerals were my favourite makeup brand, hands down. I was obsessed with their Original SPF15 foundation, their concealer and bronzer, and I was constantly on the lookout for them to be on sale at various online retailers (a lot of the time with success actually!) However, when I really became obsessed with beauty, and started trying out loads and loads of new brands, for some reason my bareMinerals products got pushed to the back of my drawers and didn’t see the sunlight for a while. That was until this summer when I sorted out my makeup storage and found this and the matte version tucked away. Whilst I’m not really a fan of the matte foundation now, the original has become a firm favourite once again. I know that a lot of people can be sceptical of the coverage of a powdered foundation, and I can definitely see why, but honestly this stuff is fab. Over the top of a light tinted moisturiser (as above) it gives me that extra coverage that I crave, or when used alone, it gives a really natural no makeup, makeup look that I love. It doesn’t feel heavy on my skin at all, and it doesn’t go cakey on me, meaning it’s perfect to use as a top up throughout the day.
So that’s it for my favourite makeup and skincare products from October – what did you think? Is there anything I’ve mentioned that you’d like to try or that you already have? As always, I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments, and thank you so much for reading!
